Solitary Restaurant Solitary enjoys one of the most fortunate sites in all the Mountains; its dining room and garden offer the most magnificent views imaginable, overlooking Mount Solitary, Kings Tableland, and the Jamison Valley all the way to the Southern Highlands. The building is heritage listed; a characteristically slate hipped-roofed, weatherboard Blue Mountains cottage set in a garden. The interior can, perhaps, be best described as light, airy, quietly sophisticated and tranquil, while respecting the history of the building.
Contemporary 16/20 It’s hard to tear your gaze away from the view of Mount Solitary and the spectacular Jamison Valley. But if you switch your focus to the wood-panelled room decorated in soothing coffee and milk chocolate tones, with white cloth’d tables and dark stained bistro chairs, you’ll find a French leaning menu that’s a revelation in of accomplished technique and earthly delights. A complimentary demi-tasse of leek and potato soup sets the scene. Sea urchin soufflé is ethereally light and complex – like catching the evening sea mist on your tongue. Ravioli of sea scallops are silken pasta pockets topped with two sweet Moreton Bay bug tails. Succulent crisp skinned Thirlmere spatchcock with tarragon custard is a wonderful reworking of a classic, while the ‘Cherry Ripe’ is a creamy cherry parfait doused in rich chocolate sauce spiked with shards of toasted coconut. The gracious and efficient service is a benchmark, to which many restaurants – not just regional ones- should aspire. This is a lovely dining experience – with or without the view.
